2000년~2001년 Artist Statement

인체를 이용한 나의 도자조각 작품들은 상상속의 이상주의적 영웅(idealized hero)이고 이러한 작품 스타일은 나에게 꽤 흥미와 기쁨의 동요를 더해주고 있다.

나의 인물들은 삶과 같은 맥락에서(Life-like) 시작하고 있는 반면 다소 무의식적이고 무표정한 기계적인 것처럼 보이기도 한다. 이것은 나의 생각 속에 현재 우리가 살아가는 모습이 너무나 바쁜 일과 속에서 지나치게 물질주의만을 쫓는 상에 짓눌려 가끔은 Humanity를 잃어버린다는 생각이 내재되어 있어서 그런 것 같다. 어쩔 수 없이 현실적 삶 속에 붙잡혀 있는 자기의 모습을 발견하게 되는 것이 흔한 일이다.

그래서 이러한 Dehumanization trend(인간다움을 빼앗는, 사람을 기계적으로 비개성적으로 만드는)를 상징화한 컴퓨터이미지를 사용하곤 한다.

나는 변하지 않는 것들에 애정과 호감이 간다. 사람들이 혹은 옛 친구들이 변한 모습을 보면 슬픈 느낌이 몰려온다. 나도 역시 변한 모습일 것이다.

전통한국의 예술과 그리고 이집트, 그리스, 로마 시대의 고대 예술들은 여전히 그 당대한 변하지 않는 위엄 있는 모습을 지키고 있다. 이러한 역사와 전통성을 갖춘 시각적 이미지들이 나의 가슴에 항상 남아있다. 그리고 이러한 이미지를 나의 작품에 응용하고 싶다.

나의 꿈속의 혹은 상상 속에서 나타나는 영웅들은 완벽한 영웅 혹은 번민하는 영웅의 모습으로 남아있을 것이다.

2000~2001

My ceramic sculptures using the human body are idealized heroes in my imagination and this style of work adds quite a bit of excitement and joy to me.

While my characters are starting in the same context as life (life-like), they also seem somewhat unconscious and expressionless mechanical. This seems to be because in my thoughts, the idea that the way we live in the present is crushed by the image of chasing only materialism in a very busy day and sometimes loses humanity. It is common to find yourself inevitably caught in a realistic life.

That's why I often use computer images symbolizing this Dehumanization trend (which takes away humanity, making people mechanically inhuman).

I love and like things that don't change. When I see people or old friends who have changed, I feel sad.

I will also look different.

Traditional Korean art and ancient art from the Egyptian, Greek, and Roman periods still preserve their magnificent and unchanging dignified appearance. Visual images with this history and tradition always remain in my heart. And I want to apply these images to my work.

The heroes that appear in my dreams or in my imagination will remain the perfect heroes or troubled heroes.
